AHMEDABAD: Gujarat's Congress leaders staged a demonstration at Lal Darwaja on Thursday to press for the appointment of a Lokayukta in the state. Those who took part in the protest included senior party functionaries like the leader of the opposition, Shaktisinh Gohil; former deputy chief minister Narhari Amin; and city Congress president, Panjkaj Shah.
Gohil urged chief minister Narendra Modi to attend a public meeting or a joint press conference to discuss the Lokayukta's appointment. "If the government is non-corrupt, why is it scared of appointing a Lokayukta?" he said. "The appointment of a commission to investigate graft was just to fool the people of the state." As for the Lokayukta, Gohil said the relevant Act did not grant any authority to the chief minister to consult or confer over the appointment. He said Modi was supporting Anna's Lokpal drive but here in the state the Lokayukta's appointment was being deliberately delayed.
